Newman uncertain on local pledges

Written By Unknown on Sabtu, 24 Januari 2015 | 22.24

QUEENSLAND Premier Campbell Newman says he will honour all his election promises but only if voters back their local LNP candidate.

MR Newman said on Saturday voters could have confidence in any pledge issued as part of the Liberal National Party's overall state plan.

But electorates that failed to vote in an LNP candidate would miss out on promised local projects, he warned."If you vote one for the LNP candidate in your local area and they get up they will deliver," the premier said in Mackay."If they're not elected, well, then the new member may have different ideas and different priorities that we cannot guarantee we will do."Mr Newman promised 85 new health professionals for the region, to develop the Galilee Basin and to pass laws protecting cane growers from price gauging by foreign sugar millers. The premier also continued to accuse Labor of being backed by bikie gangs.Opposition Leader Annastacia Palaszczuk said his allegations were serious and should be a matter for police if he had concrete evidence. But Mr Newman said Google searches showed the CFMEU Union, which supports Labor, was linked to bikie gangs."It's up to Annastacia Palaszczuk and the Labor party to demonstrate that what I've said is not the case," the premier said. But Mr Newman denied he was insinuating Labor was guilty until proven innocent.Earlier, he defended an email sent to LNP supporters featuring a photo of Ms Palaszczuk with the words "don't wake up with regrets" after election day.Mr Newman denied it was nasty or had sexual connotations. While the premier jetted from Toowoomba to Mackay and then Bundaberg, the opposition leader was in Brisbane pledging $6 million to review teacher classifications.Ms Palaszczuk said the review could boost the salaries of the state's best teachers to $120,000 but conceded it could take up to four years to complete. The Queensland Greens called for greater government accountability and transparency at a Brisbane rally. Senator Larissa Waters said the best way to achieve that was by holding a referendum on reintroducing an upper house to the state parliament.Queenslanders go to the polls on January 31.

First China coal production cut since 2000

China has recorded its first drop in coal production since 2000. Source: AAP

CHINA recorded its first drop in coal production since 2000 last year, as the world's biggest greenhouse gas emitter pulls back on its use of the fossil fuel and switches to cleaner energy sources.

ACCORDING to the country's national coal association, China produced 3.5 billion tons of coal in the first 11 months of 2014, 2.1 per cent less than the same period in 2013.

The association estimates the drop for the entire year will reach 2.5 per cent. The report, quoted by the official Xinhua News Agency on Friday, said the profits of major Chinese coal companies dropped 44 per cent in that same period to 110.5 billion yuan, or $US18 billion ($A22.3 billion), amid low global coal prices. In November, China pledged to stop the growth in its carbon emissions by 2030, and leaders are under pressure to fight air pollution affecting much of the country.China depends on coal for 80 per cent of its electricity supply and about two-thirds of total energy. The country has quickly become a world leader in solar and wind energy and aims to produce 20 per cent of its electricity through non-fossil fuel sources, including nuclear, by 2030, double the current share.

Record drownings during Vic summer

A RECORD number of people have drowned in Victoria this summer, prompting authorities to call for vigilance ahead of Australia Day.

A TOTAL of 11 people have drowned since the start of the season, four more than the five-year summer average.

Emergency Services Minister Jane Garrett says there's been a spike over the past 18 months, with the 2013/14 drowning figures the highest in a decade. She says three recent deaths were apparently linked to alcohol, and is urging Australia Day revellers to think before getting in the water."We're really concerned people aren't listening to the message that drinking alcohol and swimming just don't mix," Ms Garrett told AAP on Saturday.Life Saving Victoria operations manager Greg Scott warned parents to keep a close eye on kids, with four children under five having drowned this financial year."It is easy to get distracted at this time of year with so much activity going on but these tragic incidents highlight why it is so important to never take your eyes off children, not just in but also around water," Mr Scott said.Ms Garrett and Mr Scott both stressed the importance of swimming between the flags.Lifesavers have been involved in 330 summer rescues so far, and 90 per cent of those people weren't between the flags.A 21-year-old man drowned at Jan Juc on January 2, just 300 metres from a patrolled beach. Two men drowned recently after they were swept away while rock fishing.VICTORIA'S DROWNING TOLL* 11 drowned this summer* 6 drowned last summer* Five-year summer average = 7* 23 drowned in the past six months* Four children under five drowned in the past six months* 47 drowned in 2013/2014 financial year, highest in a decade.

Fifty Shades director 'needs a break'

Director Sam Taylor-Johnson has admitted that making the Fifty Shades Of Grey has taken its toll. Source: AAP

DIRECTOR Sam Taylor-Johnson has admitted that making the new Fifty Shades Of Grey film has taken its toll.

THE raunchy movie, starring Dakota Johnson and Jamie Dornan as lovers and based on the erotic novel by EL James, is due out next month.

Johnson, 47, who previously won acclaim for the 2009 film Nowhere Boy, has told Red magazine that "I'm literally going out of my mind.""I have seen this film over a thousand times and I'm now in a blancmange," she said."But the nuances within - the tiniest shift, look, blink of an eye - can make all the difference and flip it into the wrong territory. It's like walking a knife edge."Taylor-Johnson, whose artworks over the years have included a video of David Beckham sleeping and photographs of celebrities crying, reassured fans of the novel that she had stayed true to the best-selling book, but said that retaining creative control had been tough."I've practically eaten it. I have read it over and over," she said."Jamie and I had to sit and meet various dominants and dominatrix, just to make sure we understood that world, so that we in no way portrayed it incorrectly."The director, who is married to Aaron Taylor-Johnson, 24, said that she needed a break after working on the film."I don't want to do anything. I feel wrung dry and I need to find some building bricks again," she said."I don't think I could even compose a picture right now."The mother-of-four added: "My creative brain has to shut down for a second. I need to be at home, put my feet up, feel calmer, eat well and hang out with the kids."

But the company's recent expansion of its oil and gas division held it back in the quarter as oil prices tumbled and led to a slowdown in drilling activity.Oil and gas revenue fell 6 per cent, though the division's profit rose 1 per cent. Orders have fallen 10 per cent for the division, GE said.GE shares were up 24 cents, or 1 per cent, in trading about two hours before the market opened Friday. Gary Glitter 'plied girl with champagne'

Written By Unknown on Kamis, 22 Januari 2015 | 22.24

SINGER Gary Glitter plied a young fan with champagne and autographed her gold jacket backstage, before inviting her into a hotel room and having sex with her, a court has heard.

HIS alleged victim is said to have been just 12 years old when she went to one of the singer's performances with her mother in the northern spring of 1977.

Both of them were invited back to his dressing room, before being asked to accompany the star to his Holiday Inn hotel suite, jurors were told. But after the concert in Leicester club Baileys, the schoolgirl's mother was persuaded to leave her alone with Glitter, London's Southwark Crown Court heard on Thursday. It was then that the former chart topper allegedly struck, subjecting the youngster to a "prolonged episode of sexual abuse involving a full range of sexual activity culminating in intercourse" after lavishing her with champagne. The 70-year-old, whose real name is Paul Gadd, denies one count of plying the girl with alcohol with the intention to "stupefy or overpower" her to have sex with him.Jurors also heard that the teenager, now aged 50, was subjected to a similar ordeal in a Birmingham hotel room when she was 13 years old.Taking to the witness box, the woman sobbed as she took the oath. She told the court that her father's job afforded him "perks" such as tickets to concerts and holiday tours. The court heard how the woman's mother was a keen Gary Glitter fan, and she first attended one of the star's concerts with both her parents. She remembered it being a performance that was part of his Cabaret tour in March 1977.Jurors heard that on March 21 of that year, the youngster went backstage and was introduced to Glitter who asked her if she had enjoyed the show, and also met the singer's oldest fan.Glitter then allegedly told the girl's mother that if they attended the show late the following day, he could make more time for them.On this occasion, her mother had also shown Glitter photos of the girl's bedroom, featuring posters of the star, the court heard.Describing what happened when she went backstage the following night, the alleged victim said: "He gave us some Moet champagne - I was drinking champagne."And then my mum was talking a lot. I can't remember what she was saying. We had gold jackets and he signed his autograph on the jackets."I had a few glasses of champagne. He was just talking and then he said to my mum it was quite busy, but if we wanted to go back to the hotel with him, we could chat more."In relation to the same girl, the singer faces a further charge of unlawful intercourse with a girl aged under 13, and four counts of indecent assault.Glitter is also accused of two counts of indecent assault with regard to another fan he is said to have assaulted after inviting her to his dressing room after a concert.Jurors have already heard from one woman who claims she was under 10 years old when the glam rock star allegedly climbed into her bed and tried to rape her.Dressed in a grey overcoat, black shirt and black velvet waistcoat, and his trademark dark glasses, Glitter listened intently to proceedings with the help of lip-speak interpreters. He denies all the charges.

Rihanna wins Topshop T-shirt legal battle

Singer Rihanna has won a legal battle with high street store Topshop over a T-shirt with her image. Source: AAP

POP star Rihanna has won a legal battle with high street store Topshop over a T-shirt with her image.

IN an important ruling on celebrity "image rights", Britain's Court of Appeal upheld a ban on the store selling a Rihanna "tank" sleeveless T-shirt without her permission.

Three appeal judges agreed with an earlier High Court ruling that marketing the fashion item without the 26-year-old singer's approval amounts to "passing off", a term used to enforce unregistered trademark rights.Topshop lawyers had urged the appeal judges - Lord Justice Richards, Lord Justice Kitchin and Lord Justice Underhill - to rule that High Court judge Justice Birss had misunderstood the law on celebrity merchandising. The three judges unanimously dismissed the Topshop appeal. In the lead judgment, Lord Justice Kitchin ruled Justice Birss "was entitled to find that the sale by Topshop of the T-shirt amounted to passing off".The judges also agreed that a substantial number of the 26-year-old pop diva's fans were likely to be led into the false belief that she had authorised the T-shirt to carry her image.Rihanna's lawyers said the image was from an unauthorised photograph taken while the star was filming a video in Northern Ireland for one of her singles in 2011 and Topshop should remain banned from exploiting it.Geoffrey Hobbs QC, appearing for Topshop, which is part of the Arcadia Group, had argued at the hearing that the court was dealing with a "decorated T-shirt" in a tradition of the merchandising of star images over the decades, including those of Elvis Presley, Jimi Hendrix and Prince.Hobbs submitted Rihanna was in reality using the law wrongly to claim that "only a celebrity may ever market his or her own character".Rihanna has various lucrative endorsement deals with retailers including Topshop's high-street rival River Island.Hobbs contended the public had no expectation that clothes bearing an image were authorised by people shown in that image.

Sky UK to block porn by default

SKY is to automatically block its broadband customers from accessing pornographic websites unless they opt out in a "family friendly" move to increase online safety.

THE company has begun emailing its five million customers to tell them that its Broadband Shield feature will be automatically switched on unless they actively choose for it to be removed.

When trying to visit a website deemed unsuitable for children under the age of 13 during the day, customers will see a page reminding them to make a choice about filtering. At this point, they can accept the current setting, change their protection levels or simply turn the filter off.Once Broadband Shield is active, users cannot access a filtered site unless they choose to log in and alter their settings. The move makes Sky the first major company to automatically block customers from pornographic sites. In a blog, Sky brand director Lyssa McGowan said: "We're all aware that cyberspace can present security risks, and that the internet isn't universally suitable for children."What we're doing now is simply making sure that the automatic position of Sky Broadband Shield is the safest one for all - that's 'on', unless customers choose otherwise."We're happy to act in the interest of customer security and online safety. Knowing our customers and the internet as we do, we believe this is the right and simplest solution to a problem we all know is out there."

Six silent signs of cancer

SIX LESS OBVIOUS SIGNS YOU MIGHT HAVE CANCER:

*LUMPS... anywhere

Everybody knows finding a lump on your breasts or testicles is a reason to head to your doctor. Don't ignore unusual lumps elsewhere on your body though - on limbs, in the armpit, groin or throat, for example. They might just be an easily treatable infection, but it's always best to get them checked by your GP.*Persistent coughLingering coughs and hoarseness can be normal if you're run down, or suffer allergies, for instance. But if your cough doesn't clear up after three weeks, best get things checked. Might just be an infection or inflammation, but it could be a symptom of lung cancer too.*Unexplained weight lossIf you've been exercising more, watching what you eat or even if you're under a lot of stress, losing weight is normal. But if you're suddenly shrinking for no apparent reason, it's a good idea to tell your doctor, just in case.*Difficulty peeingFrequent peeing is usually associated with being a warning sign of possible illness. While that's important, finding it difficult to pass urine can sometimes be a symptom of cancer too. For most men, it's probably due to a harmless growth or enlargement, but speak to your doctor so they can check for prostate cancer if necessary.*Unusual night sweatsLots of things cause night sweats - hormonal changes, menopause, infections, and even the time of year and temperature of your bedroom. But unexplained persistent night sweats should ideally be checked out by your doctor as they may be a symptom of cancer.*Slow healing soresAs a general guide, minor wounds, like sores and ulcers, should clear up within a week. If they don't, there could be a number of explanations - infections or nutritional deficiencies, for example. However, if you have a stubborn unusual sore or ulcer, particularly in the mouth/tongue, genitals or skin that's been exposed to lots of sun, get it checked.

Lawyers' desperate bid to save Sukumaran

INDONESIAN lawyers for Australian man Myuran Sukumaran hope to file a judicial review of his case, potentially stalling his execution, by the end of this week.

LAWYER Todung Mulya Lubis says the appeal is being urgently prepared after Sukumaran's request for presidential clemency was rejected.

President Joko Widodo says the executions of more than 50 drug offenders on death row are needed because Indonesia faces a "drug emergency".It began on Sunday with the executions of one Indonesian and five foreigners.Mr Lubis says the death penalty is cruel and ineffective."I agree that we should punish drug traffickers heavily, but there's other alternatives to the death penalty, like jail for life without any remission," he told AAP."That's already hard for anyone."On the other hand, (the death penalty) also overlooks the fact that this narcotics crime is run systematically, it's an organised crime."Those who get punished ... they're not the masterminds of these syndicates."The lawyer said the law must also recognise that rehabilitation is achievable, as in the case of Sukumaran, and his co-ringleader Chan, whose clemency is yet to be officially rejected.Mr Lubis wouldn't comment on the appeal specifically. But the validity of the judicial review is in dispute, with the supreme and constitutional courts in Indonesia in disagreement over how many times they can be lodged.Indonesia plans to execute 20 more death row convicts this year.Mr Joko says about 50 people a day, or 18,000 Indonesians every year, die as a result of drugs.Brazil and The Netherlands recalled their ambassadors in protest at Sunday's executions, and Prime Minister Tony Abbott has not ruled out doing the same if Chan and Sukumaran are killed.
