THOUSANDS of people have joined a march in the Malaysian capital calling for the release of jailed opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim.
THE protesters, mostly wearing black, marched through the main business district of Kuala Lumpur, chanting "Reformasi" (Reforms) and "Free Anwar" as security forces monitored the scene.
A police official estimated a crowd of between 3000 and 4000 people, while organisers said protester numbers reached more than 10,000."I am very proud to be a Malaysian and to see so many people joining this rally," said Nurul Izzah, the son of Anwar and a member of parliament."This rally is not just about Anwar. This is the people expressing their disgust against the government."The protesters believe that Anwar's conviction on the charge of sodomising his former aide was politically motivated, aimed at intimidating and silencing the opposition.Anwar, 67, is currently serving a five-year jail sentence in a prison just outside the capital, after the federal court last month upheld a sodomy conviction against him.Anda sedang membaca artikel tentang
