Al-Shabab group attacks Somalian town

THE Somali Islamist group al-Shabaab has attacked a regional government headquarters in the central-southern city of Baidoa, killing nine people, police and officials say.

ATTACKERS detonated a car bomb and tried to enter the seat of newly created South West State. A gun battle followed.

The fatalities included three Somali soldiers, two Ethiopian soldiers from African Union troops and four civilians, according to Baidoa police representative Cornell Mahad Mohamed.Officials initially put the number of attackers at three, but Mohamed said they were four.Three of the attackers were killed and one captured."The three... were shot dead before they reached their target. The situation has returned to normal," Baidoa Mayor Hassan Mohamed Biikole said on Thursday.A spokesman for al-Shabaab claimed responsibility for the attack on pro-insurgent radio broadcaster Andalus.Founded in 2006, al-Qaeda-affiliated al-Shabaab seeks a state with the strictest application of Islamic law. Somalia is fighting the group with African Union backing.
