FIVE Northern Ireland politicians have been sent letters containing bullets as an extremist Protestant campaign of death threats and illegal street protests persists over Belfast City Council's decision to stop flying the British flag year-round.

Police and officials in two political parties confirmed the death-threat letters on Wednesday. All were seized by security staff screening mail at Stormont Parliamentary Building in east Belfast.

Two officials from Sinn Fein, the Irish nationalist party that represents most of the Catholic minority, also were targeted.
